A complaint was filed with the police on Friday by a woman against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bengal president Dilip Ghosh for allegedly making derogatory comments against her on Thursday.
The woman — a student from Kolkata — stood with a poster on the road as a rally led by Ghosh was moving in the Patuli area of eastern fringes of Kolkata to Bagha Jatin, in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). She was holding a poster opposing the CAA, National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR). Later, the woman said she had been heckled and verbally abused by the BJP supporters in the rally, before she was rescued by some journalists.
Later, Ghosh told the media that that the woman should “thank her stars that she was allowed to leave after just snatching away her poster and that nothing else was done to her (by party cadres)”. He had also said that his party won’t tolerate any more of such acts of protests and questioned the protesters saying why they at all went to BJP rallies to put up protests. He had also said that such protesters either wanted to be depicted as martyrs or just be in the news for being there. “There are many other places where you can go and put up protests,” he had said. Leaders of several political parties have condemned the remarks of Ghosh.
The woman filed a complaint with the police against Ghosh for making such comments. She also sought police protection fearing threat to her life. She added that she was not much surprised as she was familiar with the way Ghosh usually makes demeaning comments against people who oppose his party ideologies.
