Two persons were killed and three injured during violent clashes during a protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Wednesday afternoon. The incident took place in Jalangi block, as an argument broke out among some people.
The sequence of events is still sketchy but officers said it took place following an argument that led to violent clashes as crude bombs were hurled and shots were fired. However, there are indications that it was a planned attack, some officers said. A number of people have been detained and are being interrogated.
One of the persons killed was identified as Anarul Biswas (50), who was a prayer caller in a mosque. The other person who was killed was identified as Salauddin Sheikh (17).
A bandh call had been given in Sahebnagar village of Jalangi. It was called by CAA Birodhi Ganatantrik Manch (anti-CAA Democratic Forum) and the protesters had blocked roads and asked shop-owners in a local market to keep their shops closed. Around this time, a local Trinamool Congress leader arrived in the area to reportedly lift the blockade and an argument broke out. This led to violent clashes and the Trinamool Congress leader allegedly opened fire.
However, Trinamool Congress leaders denied this, alleging that the violence was planned by Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Trinamool MP Abu Taher said the party had nothing to do with today’s violence and alleged that the supporters of Congress and CPIM were behind it.
