On August 1, the chief minister had led an awareness walk in Kolkata on planting trees and preserving green cover. Banerjee had walked in the rally from Birla Planetarium in the Maidan area to Nazrul Mancha in Southern Avenue. The Bengal CM has been raising awareness on several environmental issues, and she had walked a rally on saving water in July.

The state forest department will distribute from various camps. Other than the puja committees in the main city, saplings will also be distributed among those in the city’s outskirts as well. All puja organisers must plant at least one sapling at one side of the pandal to make people aware of the importance of planting trees.

The municipalities of Dum Dum, South Dum Dum will also distribute saplings to the Puja committees – and saplings will be handed over when they seek clearance for the respective pujas.
