She had herself been trained in self defence as a school girl – a training she says made her more confident. Now, as a member of Parliament, Mimi Chakraborty wants to empower schoolgirls by giving them more confidence through self-defence training programmes. Such an initiative has now been started by her in Jadavpur, the constituency from where she was elected in the last Lok Sabha polls.
Chakbraborty has taken the initiative along with the police authorities of South 24 Parganas district, part of which is under the Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat. The first camp was held on Sunday at a school of Sonarpur in the district. More than 50 students from various schools participated in it.
The martial arts training is being offered free of cost and camps will be conducted in batches with selected students from each school brought under the programme, titled “Self Defence Coaching Camp for Girls/Women”. The trainers are black belts Rupa Barui and Dibyendu Chattopadhyay.
Various programmes are being taken up by the state and Central governments for preventing violence against women. Mimi Chakraborty, who is an actor in Bengali films, is one of the youngest MPs in the country. According to her, safety of women is one of the major areas that she is addressing and she wants that women in her constituency live in a safe environment they feel comfortable in.
The state police have in recent times, installed CCTVs in most urban pockets of the area, as well as at some “sensitive” areas of Baruipur, Rajpur, Sonarpur, Bhangar and outside various schools.
