State police for KMC polls, says Calcutta High Court

The Calcutta High Court has quashed a plea by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeking deployment of Central forces for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections. The elections will be held under the supervision of the state police. If anyone feels unsafe or has a complaint, it can be lodged with the police, the court has said.

The Supreme Court on Monday had refused to entertain the petition filed by the BJP and asked them to approach the Calcutta High Court. On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court too refused to stay the KMC election – scheduled on December 19 – and directed the state poll panel and the Bengal government to take measures for holding the elections.
