State to rebuild homes destroyed by fire in Baghbazar slum

Food and warm clothes distributed among the affected.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will rebuild the homes that were destroyed by the fire in Baghbazar slum on Wednesday. Around a hundred homes will be rebuilt, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Thursday during a visit to the area on Thursday morning.

A massive fire broke out in the slum area in north Kolkata, with 25 fire engines rushing to the spot to bring the blaze under control. No casualty was reported, but nearly a hundred homes were reduced to ashes. Local people alleged that the fire engines reached late, and Rapid Action Force (RAF) was used to control the angry mob.

The fire spread to the adjacent Sarada Mayer Bari and important documents are said to have been destroyed in the house.

Mamata Banerjee along with KMC administrator Firhad Hakim and minister Shashi Panja reached the slum and assured the homes would be rebuilt. Food and warm clothes were also asked to be distributed among the affected families.
