A shot was fired outside Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University on Sunday night, making it the third incident of firing in four days at an area of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). However, no one was injured in the incident.
Two persons — who could not be identified — were said to have reached the area in a two-wheeler and opened fire. This took place outside the university’s gate number 5. Some people have been gathering at the university gates at night to protest against the CAA, it was reported. This is not too far from Shaheen Bagh, where hundreds of people, most of them women, are holding a protest against the CAA since December 15, 2019. Police teams are investigating the matter.
NDTV reported, quoting a senior police officer, that officers from Jamia Nagar went to the place and searched, but no empty bullet shells were found. He also added that there were different versions of how the incident took place.
Last week, a young man – said to be a minor – fired at protesters outside Jamia Millia University, injuring a student. On Saturday, another man fired shots standing near police barricades put up at Shaheen Bagh.
The three incidents of firing have taken place one after the other, and assume particular significance in the light of slogans raised at a campaign rally in Delhi where Union minister of state Anurag Thakur was present. The slogans were “Goli Maaro ***” (shoot the traitors). He was banned for three days from campaigning.
Following the incidents of firing – and before the Jamia Millia University firing on Sunday night – senior police officer Chinmay Biswal, deputy police commissioner was removed by the Election Commission citing the “ongoing situation”.
