“Our misguided youths” opened fire at Jamia Millia-Shaheen Bagh: BJP MP Arjun Singh

Arjun Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from West Bengal’s Barrackpore, on Monday said that “our” misguided youngsters opened fire outside Jamia Millia Islamia University and Shaheen Bagh. The significance of his use of the word “our” was not clear, and whether he used it as a way of “sympathising” with the misguided youths or meant they were part of the political party to which he belongs.

A shot was fired outside Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University on Sunday night, making it the third incident of firing in four days at an area of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

In an interview with news agency ANI, Arjun Singh said that the Opposition was protecting the Muslims at Shaheen Bagh and made them sit there, and the incidents at Jamia Millia University and Shaheen Bagh (the firing) had nothing to do with the CAA. He said that “our misguided youngsters have opened fire”. [“Jaise Muslim logon ko vipaksh ke logon ne protection de karke Shaheen Bagh mein baithaya hai, Jamia mein ghatna ghati, jiska CAA se matlab nahi. Humare kum umar ke bachhe bharamit ho karke goli chalaye hain”.]

Last week, a young man – said to be a minor – fired at protesters at Jamia Millia University, injuring a student. On Saturday, another man fired shots standing near police barricades put up at Shaheen Bagh.

The three incidents of firing have taken place one after the other, and assume particular significance in the light of slogans raised at a campaign rally in Delhi where Union minister of state Anurag Thakur was present. The slogans were “Goli Maaro ***” (shoot the traitors). He was banned for three days from campaigning.

Senior police officer Chinmay Biswal, deputy police commissioner was removed by the Election Commission citing the “ongoing situation”.
