Flood situation in Kerala under control, rebuilding process under way

The flood situation in Kerala slowly coming under control, the main task for the state remains to rebuild itself for the immense loss of life and property suffered.
Over 200 deaths have been reported from the state. With the completion of the Navy’s relief operstions on Wednesday, the Pinarayi Vijayyan government has now turned to providing shelter and refuge to survivors of the calamity.
Nearly 13.43 lakh people are living in 3,314 relief camps across the state.The chief minister is expected to visit relief camps in Pathanamthitta district’s Kozhencherry, Alappuzha, North Paravoor in Ernakulam district and Chalakudy in Thrissur district. People in other regions of the state have gradually started moving back to their homes from relief camps.
The Ministry of external Affairs (MEA) has meanwhile clarified that in line with the existing policy, the government is committed to meeting the requirements for relief and rehabilitation through “domestic” efforts. Contributions to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund from NRIs, PIOs and international entities such as foundations would however be welcome.
The World Health Organisation is ready to offer Kerala diagnostic kits to test water, water filters and monitoring non-communicable disease patients on medication.
The state is reeling from the worst flooding and landslide since a similar calamity suffered by the state in 1924, killing hundreds and displacing lakhs with further damage to land and property.
