Indian Railways is paying Rs.5 to passengers for dropping plastic into bottle crushers

In compliance with the United Nations’ motto of curbing plastic pollution on this year’s World Environment Day, Indian Railways has installed bottle crushers at the Vadodara Railway station. After dropping every bottle into the machine, a person needs to provide her or his mobile phone number following which they would receive a cashback of Rs.5 on their Paytm wallet.

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), that serves meals to the railway passengers, launched a trial run from June 5 of using eco-friendly food packaging to serve meals on eight selected Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains starting from New Delhi. If it turns out to be successful, Railways will apply this to all premium trains including Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi.

IRCTC is currently using plates made out of bagasse – fibre after extricating sugarcane juice – which can be recycled.
