Jawhar Sircar nominated by Trinamool Congress as its Rajya Sabha candidate

Byelections will be held on August 9.

Trinamool Congress has nominated retired IAS officer, Jawhar Sircar, as the party’s Rajya Sabha candidate. Sircar has served as an officer for nearly 42 years. He has worked in both West Bengal government and the Central government as an IAS officer, and has been Prasar Bharati CEO for several years.

Dinesh Trivedi was the Trinamool’s Rajya Sabha member, who was elected on April 3, 2020, and his tenure was till April 2, 2026. However, Trivedi resigned from the Rajya Sabha on February 12, 2021, and subsequently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The byelection for this vacant position is scheduled on August 9. Results will be out on the same day.

The Trinamool Congress, in its official Twitter handle wrote: “We are delighted to nominate Mr @jawharsircar in the Upper House of the Parliament. Mr Sircar spent nearly 42 years in public service & was also the former CEO of Prasar Bharati. His invaluable contribution to public service shall help us serve our country even better!”

Sircar has been critical of the BJP-led government at the Centre, which includes his comments over the controversy concerning former chief secretary of West Bengal Alapan Bandopadhyay being called to the Centre a day before his retirement.
