Nirmala Sitharaman proposes permitting Aadhaar use in place of PAN card

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday proposed to allow the use of Aadhaar number instead of a Permanent Account Number (PAN), during the presentation of the annual Budget in the Lok Sabha. This may be applicable in filing of income tax returns. The Finance Minister said that this will allow those not having a PAN card to use their Aadhaar number when it was required.

The Finance Minister also proposed to issue Aadhaar cards for non-resident Indians (with Indian passports) after they arrive in India, without the mandatory 180-day wait.

Sitharaman, the first full-time woman Finance Minister of India presented the first Union Budget of the new government, following the release of the Economic Survey for 2018-19 on Thursday.
