Major highlights: Union Budget 2020 for “aspirational India” says Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Budget 2020 stating that it was a Budget for “aspirational India”, and said that the “fundamentals of the economy” were strong. She also added that inflation was “well under control” and added that national security is the “top priority” for the government.

Here are some of the major highlights from the Union Budget 2020:

*₹99,300 crore proposed for Education sector

*₹22,000 crore for power and renewal energy sector

*₹85,000 crore for welfare of Scheduled Castes & Backward Classes

*₹30,757 crore allocated for Jammu & Kashmir

*2000 kilometre of strategic highways to be built

*Agri credit target for 2020 has been set at ₹15 lakh crore

*Special measures for 100 water distressed districts in the country

*Deposit insurance coverage has been raised to ₹5 lakh from ₹1 lakh

Sitharaman also said that the Central government was committed to doubling farmers’ incomes by 2022, and proposed to end manual scavenging.
