Four men aged between 20 and 26 have been arrested in the gangrape and murder of a 27-year-old veterinarian in Shamshabad, 20 km from Hyderbad on Wednesday night. The burnt body of the young woman – was found the next morning.
The accused – identified as Jolly Shiva, Jollu Naveen, Mohammad Areef and Chintakunta Chennakesavulu – are lorry drivers and cleaners from Narayanpet, 150 km from Hyderabad.
According to reports, police said the men saw her parking her two-wheeler near a toll plaza and they planned to trap her. They punctured one of the tyres and waited for her to return. When she returned at around 9 pm, they offered to help her get the two-wheeler repaired. Since she could not trust these men completely, she had called her sister to tell her she was scared. The men subsequently took her to a compound where they repeatedly gang-raped her and then killed her. When the woman’s sister called her later, she found the phone switched off. The brutal gangrape and murder took place within an hour, police said.
After murdering her, the men brought petrol and set the body on fire. The woman’s body and scooter were found in separate places. The four lorry drivers and cleaners involved in the gangrape and murder were identified from CCTV footage of the toll plaza.
The brutal gangrape and murder has shocked the nation. Telangana Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali’s comments on Friday – saying that the woman should have called police instead of calling up her sister – has also been shocking. However, later he clarified that he meant to say that if she had called up the police, she could have been saved.
The Central government meanwhile, has issued an advisory to all states to check crime against women. Union minister of state for home, G Kishan Reddy said, “On behalf of the Central government, I am talking to the government officials of Telengana. Those involved in the crime should be socially boycotted and no lawyer should represent them.”
