Nirmal Kundu, the Trinamool Congress president of ward number six of north Dum Dum, was gunned down earlier this week at the Patna Thakurtala area of Nimta. Kundu was standing on the road outside his house when two assailants came on a two-wheeler and gunned him down. The episode has been recorded in CCTV camera. It was not a deserted spot; in fact, many people are eyewitnesses and were left stunned by what they saw. Kundu was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.

According to police, supari killers were hired to carry out the murder. Two persons – Sujay Das and Suman Kundu – were arrested. One of them is a BJP worker in the area. More people are suspected to be involved in the incident.

The northern fringes of Kolkata have witnessed several clashes between the Trinamool and the BJP over the past couple of weeks since the election results were announced, and the Trinamool’s performance has been way below the party’s expectations. Even in the run-up to the elections, the area was hardly peaceful.

BJP leaders however, have denied the party’s involvement in the incident.
