Trinamool launches new slogan, projects Mamata Banerjee as “Daughter of Bengal”

"Outsider versus insider" debate lies at the core of the slogan.

The Trinamool Congress on Saturday launched its new slogan for the coming Assembly elections in West Bengal – “Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chaye” (Bengal wants its own daughter). The poster, with the slogan, shows Mamata Banerjee, the slogan written in Bengali, along with some sweets and flowers.

Bengal’s ruling party has already raised the “insider versus outsider” debate for the coming elections, in which they have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of bringing in leaders from outside.

The Trinamool Congress’ new slogan, along with Mamata Banerjee’s photograph, has been placed in hoardings in various parts of the state.

Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah has said during his visits to the state that if voted to power, the BJP will make a “bhoomiputra” (a son of the soil) the next chief minister of Bengal. However, so far, the BJP has not projected any chief minister “face” for the party.

Launching the new slogan on Saturday, Trinamool Congress president Subrata Bakshi said that Mamata Banerjee’s achievements as a CM has been widely noticed and Bengal will vote for its own daughter. “The Trinamool has improved the condition of the state and Banerjee is known across West Bengal. Her popularity makes it evident that Bengal indeed needs her daughter in the coming days,” he said. He said that Banerjee is the “daughter” of the soil and she can understand the needs of the people better.

According to poll analysts, this move by the ruling party is to highlight all the more that BJP is an “outsider”. At her public rallies, Mamata Banerjee has been reiterating that she is the candidate for all 294 constituencies in the state.
