Trinamool, Left, Congress bring joint resolution in state Assembly against NRC

The ruling Trinamool Congress, Left parties and the Congress today passed a joint resolution opposing the National Register of Citizens (NRC). A discussion on the matter took place in the state Assembly today after which the resolution was placed in the House.

Implementation of the NRC in Assam on August 31, has left out 19 lakh people from the list, who are likely to be put into detention centres.

All political parties, except the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pleaded for a discussion on the issue in the Assembly. After Assam, there are possibilities of the NRC implementation in several other states including in West Bengal. Opposing the resolution, the BJP staged a walkout.

The Trinamool Congress has decided to take up a state-wide agitation opposing NRC in Assam. Mass protests will be held on September 7 and 8, and on September 12, a protest rally will be organised from Chiria More to Shyambazar in north Kolkata, in which the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is expected to be present.
