Under-construction bridge collapses in West Bengal’s Kakdwip

An under-construction bridge – over Kalnagini river – collapsed in West Bengal’s Kakdwip area of South 24 Parganas district on Monday morning. No one was injured, but it led to fear and panic in the area.

Not much detail on the reasons for the bridge collapse was known, police said. Senior officials and experts rushed to the area for inspection.

This is the third bridge to collapse in Bengal in September. On September 4, a portion of the Majerhat bridge in Kolkata collapsed, killing three persons and injuring more than a score. A few days later, on September 7, another bridge collapsed in north Bengal’s Siliguri which left a truck driver injured.

Manturam Pakhira, the Sunderbans affairs minister, who heads the department in charge of the bridge, said a probe will be conducted and the guilty will be punished.
