West Bengal Phase II election in 30 seats today, all eyes on Nandigram

30 seats in four districts go to the polls.

The second phase of election in Bengal started on Thursday. Elections are being held in four districts – in parts of Bankura, East Midnapore, West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas.

Nandigram – the focal point of the battle for Bengal – also goes to polls in this phase, with chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her once close aide Suvendu Adhikari fighting against each other from this seat. Thirty constituencies in Bengal vote today.

The seats where elections are being held today are Gosaba, Patharpratima, Kakdwip, Sagar, Tamluk, Panskura Purba, Panskura Paschim, Moyna, Nandakumar, Mahisadal, Haldia, Nandigram, Chandipur, Kharagpur Sadar, Narayangarh, Sabang, Pingla, Debra, Daspur,  Ghatal, Chandrakona, Keshpur, Taldangra, Bankura, Barjora, Onda, Bishnupur, Katulpur, Indus and Sonamukhi.

Nandigram has been in focus from the time Mamata Banerjee announced that she would contest from the seat where Suvendu Adhikari had been elected lawmaker in 2016. He had left Trinamool Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in December 2020. Way back in 2007, under Mamata Banerjee’s directions, Suvendu Adhikari had generated a movement against a chemical hub in 2007 that had a domino effect and toppled the Left Front after their 34-year-rule in the state.

All eyes are on Nandigram today, as it’s a do-or-die fight for both Banerjee and Adhikari.
