“What’s the big hurry for Assembly bypolls?” Suvendu Adhikari asks
Trinamool Congress wants bypolls to be held soon.
There is no situation for holding byelections in West Bengal right now in view of the COVID-19 situation, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari said on Friday. Adhikari said this in Chinsurah of Bengal’s Hooghly district.
“What is the big hurry?” he asked, speaking to journalists after a party meeting in the district, adding that the COVID-19 situation in the state was “alarming” and many had not received even the first dose of vaccine. “Those who can’t organise civic body polls for so long, nor run local trains, are now hurrying to press for Assembly elections. Local trains not running is indicative of the fact that the pandemic situation is far from normal, and attempts are being made to reduce official figures,” he added.
A team of Trinamool Congress leaders called on the Election Commission of India to organise the pending election and byelection in seven Assembly seats of the state urgently. The team said that the COVID-19 is now under control and thus the pending elections should be held as quickly as possible.
Adhikari said that if the BJP can choose one of its MLAs to be the chief minister in Uttarakhand, the same could be done in West Bengal. “There are so many MLAs in Trinamool Congress. Surely one of them can be made CM? Why can’t it happen? Is it because it is her (Mamata Banerjee’s) private limited company?” Adhikari said.
Adhikari also said that many were now joining the Trinamool for their “bread and butter”. “When elections come, they will come to us,” he said.
