The West Bengal government is mobilising 400 additional buses from Monday to make it easier for people to reach their workplace from the first day of the week.
After the unlock period started from June 1, people have been facing difficulty in reaching office as the number of buses are inadequate to handle the pressure of commuters. While both state-run and private buses are plying, crowding is not allowed in them in order to prevent the spread of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). As a result, the number of buses are falling short, and there are long queues of people in bus stops and terminuses. The state government last week allowed its employees to work in shifts to handle this problem. The chief minister also appealed to private companies to follow the same system and to simultaneously allow work from home as much as possible.
Meanwhile, a decision was taken to introduce 400 more state-run buses in greater Kolkata to handle the additional pressure. Out of these, 200 buses will be air-conditioned. The buses will connect routes from Esplanade-BBD Bag, Howrah station, Sector V (Salt Lake), Garia, Behala, Barasat and Barrackpore.
