Mamata Banerjee visits flood-hit areas of south Bengal, speaks to PM Modi
15 persons have died and 3 lakh people are displaced in south Bengal due to the floods.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today visited the flood-hit areas of south Bengal – various parts of Howrah district. She went to Amta and Udaynarayanpur, the worst-hit areas. Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured all support to her to fight the floods in Bengal, his office tweeted today. Banerjee and PM Modi discussed the matter over phone.
The Bengal CM was to do an aerial survey of the areas, but it had to be cancelled due to bad weather conditions. There is heavy rainfall in various parts of south Bengal. She travelled in a vehicle to Amta and Udaynarayanpur of Howrah district.
“PM Narendra Modi spoke to WB CM Mamata Banerjee on the flood situation caused by water discharge from dams in parts of the state. PM assured all possible support from the Centre to help mitigate the situation. PM Modi prays for the safety and wellbeing of those in affected areas,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted.
Several parts of south Bengal are inundated – including East Burdwan, West Burdwan, East Midnapore, Hooghly, Howrah, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah and West Midnapore. At least 15 people have died, and around three lakh people have been displaced after heavy rain and subsequent discharge of water from the dams of the Damodar Valley Corporation. The DVC, since July 31, has released 5.43 lakh cusec of water till Tuesday.
