Minimum age of marriage for women raised from 18 to 21; cabinet clears proposal

Currently, the minimum age of marriage for men is 21 but for women, it is 18.

The Union cabinet today cleared the proposal to raise the minimum age of marriage for women from 18 to 21. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the plan is under review. PM Modi, during his Independence Day speech last year, had made a mention of the proposal.

Currently, the minimum age of marriage for men is 21 but for women, it is 18. For this, the government has to make changes in the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act, and the Hindu Marriage Act.

A task force for this was set up in June last year. The recommendations were submitted in December. The task force has said that a woman must be at least 21 years old at the time of first pregnancy, and delay in marriage for the woman will have a positive impact.
