KOLKATA: The Bengal Story Bureau: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections will be conducted within the next six months. The declaration sets the stage for the first major urban electoral battle following the Bharatiya Janata Party forming its first government in the state last month.
Addressing the media, Adhikari confirmed that the state administration has initiated the preliminary paperwork required to conduct the civic polls. The upcoming municipal elections are critical as they will test the new government’s urban support base in the state capital, an area historically dominated by the Trinamool Congress.
First Electoral Test After Assembly Victory
The announcement comes weeks after Adhikari took oath as the Chief Minister following the historic May 2026 assembly election results. While the ruling party swept large parts of the state to form a majority government, Kolkata remained a closely contested urban zone.
Political analysts view the upcoming KMC elections as a crucial indicator of whether the urban electorate is fully aligning with the new state administration. The outgoing 144-ward municipal board was overwhelmingly controlled by the Trinamool Congress, with former mayor Firhad Hakim leading the civic body.
Adhikari stated that the government is committed to ensuring a transparent and peaceful election process in the city. He added that the administration will provide full logistical and security support to the State Election Commission once the formal schedule is finalised.
Administrative Preparations Begin
According to senior state officials, the municipal affairs department and the State Election Commission will soon begin reviewing the voter lists and polling station requirements across the city. The exact polling dates will be decided after comprehensive security assessments.

Opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress and the Left Front, are expected to mobilise heavily for the civic elections to retain their influence in Kolkata. The formal notification detailing the exact dates for the 144 wards is expected in the coming months.
