Who won the seat last time?

In 2016 by-election, Trinamool Congress’ Partha Pratim Roy won the seat with 59.03%, followed by BJP in the second place (28.32% votes) and Forward Bloc (6.49%votes). Congress was in the fourth place.

Who won before that?

This has been a Forward Bloc seat traditionally, with Renuka Sinha from the Trinamool Congress winning it for the first time for the party in 2014. She won the seat with 39.51% votes. Forward Bloc was second and BJP was third.

What about this time?

There has been trouble here for BJP’s candidate Nisith Adhikary right from the start, with the party workers protesting the choice of candidate when the first list of candidates was out. They even ransacked their own party office. Adhikary – who was earlier with the Trinamool Congress, had been expelled from the party and has 11 cases pending against him.

Paresh Adhikary – who was earlier with the Forward Bloc, joined the Trinamool Congress. Adhikary was a minister in the Left Front cabinet, a lawmaker from the Mekhligunj Assembly constituency, though he had lost from there in 2016.
