The West Bengal government on Thursday announced suspension of classes in all government schools, government-sponsored and non-government aided schools from May 3 in view of the cyclone Fani.

The cyclone is expected to hit Odisha coast on Friday afternoon and will have a wind speed of 200 km per hour. It might cause large-scale damage in 19 districts of Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.

During the day, the state government decided to suspend classes and to extend the summer vacations, and said in a note that the decision was being taken in view of the impending cyclone and the hot weather conditions prevailing in general. The vacations will continue till June 30.

While this does not apply to the private schools, the state has also written to the Secondary and Higher Secondary boards to advice the same to the schools under their control.

The decision for schools in other boards was however not clear, neither uniform. Some schools announced that they would remain closed on Friday, while many schools haven’t made any announcements.
