Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Chinmayanand was arrested today in a rape case filed by a 23-year-old woman.
The law student in one of the institutions run by Chinmayanand, has said that the politician had facilitated her admission into the institution and in return, kept on pressurising her asking for sexual favours.
He is also alleged to have secretly photographed the woman, which he had threatened to leak. She was also sexually assaulted at gunpoint at times, the woman has said.
The law student had gone missing after making the allegations on social media. She made the allegations without naming the politician initially. Later, she was tracked down by police and the Supreme Court had constituted a special investigation team for handling the case. The girl gave a statement in court on Monday.
Chinmayanand’s lawyer however said that the politician hasn’t been charged with rape but with “misusing authority for sexual intercourse” or “sexual intercourse not amounting to the offence of rape”. The punishment to this, if proven true, entails a maximum of five years of jail with fine.
The BJP leader, a former union minister, was produced before the court today and sent to custody for 14 days.
