Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yodi Adityanath has said that “revenge will be taken” against all those involved in arson after being identified from CCTV footage. He said that their properties will be seized and auctioned to compensate for the losses in public properties.
A large number of protesters were detained by police across the country yesterday from different states for protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). In many places such as Lucknow, Mengaluru there was violence, leading to deaths of three persons. Two of these were in Mengaluru and one in Lucknow. However, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police OP Singh claimed it was unlikely that the person who died in Lucknow died due to a bullet injury.
Reacting to the violence, Adityanath said: “Revenge will be taken against these people by seizing their properties”. He said “These types of antisocial and anarchist moves will never be tolerated”.
Adityanath, who runs the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh, alleged that the opposition parties were misleading people about the CAA. He said that the Congress, Samajwadi Party and the Left parties were instigating people to protest.
