The Indian Railways on Tuesday announced an increase in ticket price to be implemented from January 1.
The fare for ordinary non-AC classes will have an increase of 01 paisa per kilometre, mail and express non-AC classes will have 02 paisa per kilometre increase and AC classes will have an increase of 04 paisa per kilometre. The last fare revision was in 2014-15. This means that in Kolkata-Delhi Rajdhani for example, the fare will be about Rs 58 more.
There won’t be any increase for suburban train services however, which constitutes 66 per cent of the Indian Railways’ passengers. Reservation fee and superfast charges will also remain the same and the hike won’t be applicable to tickets that have been booked already.
The Indian Railways authorities have said in a statement that the fare increase had become a necessity for passenger amenities and would help its modernisation.
