Avalanche hits SUV at Khardung La Pass killing one and trapping nine

An SUV carrying ten passengers got buried by an avalanche this morning at Khardung La Pass in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region. One person has been reported to be killed and nine others are missing.

One of the highest motorable roads in the world, the Khardungla Pass is towards the north of Leh  and considered to be the gateway to places like Shyok and the Nubra Valley. The SUV met with an avalanche here at the altitude of 17, 500 feet. According to eyewitness reports, the Scorpio carrying the passengers was struck by a ‘giant wall of snow’.

Rescue operations are currently underway. At the site of the incident, forty kilometres outside Leh, rescuers from district administration, police and the State Disaster Relief Force are at work to save the trapped travellers.
