Baba Ramdev stokes controversy, says Lord Ram ancestor of both Hindus and Muslims

Baba Ramdev, speaking to media persons in Nadiad, has remarked that Lord Ram is the possible ancestor of not just Hindus but also of Muslims. Stoking controversy while speaking after a yoga event being held there, the spiritual guru added that the Ram temple ‘must be constructed’.

Ramdev stated that Ayodhya was the ‘undisputed’ place of birth of Lord Ram and therefore it was the right place to construct it. Not places like the Vatican or Mecca-Medica, he Ramdev.

Calling it far from a political issue, he stated that either the Parliament or the Supreme Court should find a solution to the impasse. Earlier, Baba Ramdev had said that if Hindus ‘collectively march’ towards Ayodhya for the construction of the temple, it would lead to a law and order situation.

Baba Ramdev’s statement comes after the government filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to hand over the undisputed land near the disputed mandir-masjid site to the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas or the trust overlooking the Ram temple plan.

Out of the 67 acres of land acquired by the government over 25 years ago, 2.7 acres of land are disputed. The Supreme Court had imposed status-quo on the entire land after the destruction in 1992 of the 16th century Babri Masjid that stood there.

The government’s request to remove status-quo on the non-disputed land is especially significant considering that the Lok Sabha elections are less than six months away.

Earlier law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had stated that the Ram Janmabhoomi case should be resolved quickly. Speaking to news agency ANI, the law minister is quoted to have said that the Ayodhya case which is ‘pending for the last 70 years’ had been resolved in ‘favour of the temple’ by the Allahabad High Court in 2010. He added that it is currently ‘on hold’ in the Supreme Court and that the matter must be resolved ‘without any delay’.
