Cop among two killed over alleged cow slaughter in UP’s Bulandshahr

A police officer and a local youth were killed in the Shyana area of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh on Monday after clashes broke out over alleged cow slaughter.

Protesters attacked a police station and set police vans on fire. The police officer has been identified as Inspector Subodh Kumar. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A local person – identified as Sumit – was also killed. A constable was seriously injured.

According to officials, protests in the area began when people found alleged carcass of a cow. There are also reports that the number of carcasses was quite a few. Following this reported discovery, a large number of people gathered and blocked a road.

When police reached the spot and tried to clear the road, some people started pelting stones and attacked them. During this time, police opened fire to disperse the crowd, but then the mob attacked the police station and set police vehicles on fire.

The cause of the deaths – including that of the police officer – is not exactly clear. There are various reports indicating that he may have been either killed in the stone pelting or he may have been shot at.

There are indications that the firing came from the mob’s side. A probe has been ordered to find out the details of stone pelting and firing.

The situation in the area continues to be tense and a huge police contingent has been deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.
