Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today said that she could sense that the country is moving towards a Presidential form of government.
“I want to tell you – especially to all the educated people — that we are heading towards a presidential form of government, with one election, one leader, one political party and one emergency. Mark my words – remember I said it today,” she said.
Banerjee said, “the voices of the people are being gagged, political parties are being threatened, the media has been purchased and no one is being allowed to enter Kashmir. The government at the Centre is emptying the country’s coffers.” She said at a public meeting in Kolkata to mark the foundation day of the Trinamool Congress’s youth wing, Chhatra Parishad.
Banerjee alleged that central investigating agencies are “threatening” in every sphere. Mentioning horse trading in Karnataka, she said that the next target was Bengal, as “we are the ones to fight… who raise voice against them”. “Bangla ke dokhol korey nitey chaichhey (They are trying to overpower Bengal),” she said.
She said she was not afraid and ready to go to jail. “Today, they are calling my brother, tomorrow they will call me. I will not bow down to BJP’s communal politics,” she said.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Dilip Ghosh, reacting to Banerjee’s comments, said that Banerjee had made such comments “out of fear”. “She is scared and afraid of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). After seeing what has happened to P Chidambaram, she is afraid of arrest and arrest of many of her ‘brothers’ and so she is saying all this. But she cannot gain sympathy through it because people know and people are with us,” Ghosh said.
