The Madras High Court has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the police firing at Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district in May this year that killed 13 people. They were protesting against the Sterlite Copper plant when police opened fire.
A video clipping even showed a policeman in civil clothes atop a vehicle aiming his firearm at the protesting group of people. The protesters were demanding closure of the plant on environmental grounds.
The episode on May 22 and 23 in which police opened fire and 13 persons were killed, led the administration to shut down the plant.
