COVID-19 in Bengal: discharge rate increases to 70.07%, is the overall situation improving?

The COVID-19 situation appears to be improving in West Bengal even as the number of cases being reported per day has been increasing. This is indicative from the discharge rate of patients – for the first time it has crossed 70 per cent. On Monday, the percentage of patients discharged stood at 70.07 per cent, with total 21,683 active cases in the state currently. However, the brighter picture is indicative from the fact that the percentage of positive cases out of the total tests done has come down rather sharply in the past few days.

The number of new cases on August 3 however was 2,716. There has been approximately over 2,500 cases per day for the past few days, but the good thing has been the huge increase in the number of tests, say officials.

“The number of new cases being reported has a lot to do with the increased number of tests. If the discharge rate steadily improves, then the situation can be said to have improved remarkably,” an official of the state health department said. Altogether 22,122 tests were done on August 3.

Figures over the past five days indicate that the total number of tests done has steadily increased, and the number of new cases too has increased during this period (other than on August 3). The percentage of the total number of new cases to the number of total samples tested has however, kept reducing – from 13.49 per cent on July 30 to 12.27 per cent on August 3. Officials say that apart from the increased discharge rate, this is a good sign that shows that though the number of daily cases has increased along with an increased number of tests done, the percentage of positive cases out of the total tests done has come down.
