COVID-19 in India: 37,336 cases, nearly one-third cases from Maharashtra

The number of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in India increased to 37,336 on Saturday. Maharashtra with 11,506 cases accounts for one-third of all the cases. So far, 9,951 persons across the country have recovered, while there have been 1,218 deaths. The recovery rate in the country is 26.64 per cent so far.

Other states with high number of cases are Gujarat (4,721), Delhi (3,738), Madhya Pradesh (2,719), Rajasthan (2,666), Tamil Nadu (2,526), Uttar Pradesh (2,328), Andhra Pradesh (1,463) and Telangana (1,039).

The Centre started special trains for workers, students and others stranded outside their home states amidst the ongoing lockdown. The lockdown which started on March 24 midnight has been extended to two weeks starting May 4. It was earlier scheduled to end on May 3.

The trains will carry between 1,000 and 1,200 people maintaining social distancing rules. Passengers will be screened for COVID-19 before boarding trains. Wearing of masks is mandatory for all passengers. However, only those “nominated and identified” by respective state governments will be allowed to board the trains. Students can use their student identity cards or a text message from district magistrate as boarding pass for the trains. Forwarded messages will not be accepted.

Meanwhile, 122 jawans at a battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Delhi tested positive for COVID-19 in two weeks, raising concerns for the government. The battalion has 1,000 jawans.
