COVID-19 in West Bengal: 4,476 new cases in just 2 days, discharge rate drops to 58.56%

The COVID-19 situation in the state looks worrying, with 4,476 new cases reported in just two days – on July 18 and 19. The discharge rate of patients in the state has dropped to 58.56 per cent now. The discharge rate had reached over 66 per cent earlier this month.

State health officials said that the increase in the number of new cases is partly due to the increase in the number of tests being done right now. Only July 19, when 2,278 new cases were reported on a single day, the total number of tests done was 13,471. On July 18, when 2,198 new cases were reported, the number of tests done was 13,465. On the day before that (July 17) there were 1,894 new cases and the tests done was 13,240.

However, the figures indicate that there has been a percentage increase too. Within a span of nine days, the percentage of new cases out of the total number of tests conducted has increased from 11.87 per cent to 16.9 per cent. This means that the percentage of people who tested positive for the number of tests done has increased during this time.
