Kolkata Police has booked 11,300 car owners in past three weeks for coming out of their homes during lockdown. Added to that, 1,549 cars were seized in last six days. The lockdown which started on March 24 midnight to contain Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) will last till May 3.
People have been repeatedly asked by the government to not step out of their houses except for emergencies or purchasing essential commodities. However, police say that the empty roads during the ongoing lockdown has led to some people venturing out without reason. Many car owners were found to provide strange excuses explaining why they should be allowed out of their homes during the lockdown. Some of them were even found to drive around in cars with fake e-passes.
On a normal day, around two-third of the seized vehicles consist of two wheelers. But around 40 per cent of seized vehicles in last six days were four-wheelers.
Police are taking action against those who are failing to cite genuine reasons. For fake e-passes or rash driving on empty roads, harsher action is being taken. Police are cross-checking the QR code in e-passes on vehicles with an app. If it is found fake, charges of cheating and forgery are being slapped.
