COVID-19: No postponement, civic polls to be held with restrictions

There is no postponement of civic polls scheduled for January 22, as of now. State election commissioner Saurav Das held a series of meetings today to review the situation in view of the huge COVID-19 surge.

Elections in four civic bodies — Siliguri, Asansol, Salt Lake and Chandannagar — are scheduled on January 22 in 227 seats. With Covid cases surging and the threat of the Omicron variant, the Opposition in West Bengal have been pressuring the ruling party to postpone the civic polls. However, as of now, there is no change in schedule and specific restrictions on campaigns, filing of nominations, voting etc. are being worked out.
