COVID-19, Omicron: No shutdown now, we are reviewing the situation, says Mamata Banerjee

Matter regarding educational institutions is also being seriously reviewed.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today said that her government is “seriously reviewing” the current situation of COVID-19 surge and the increase in Omicron cases. However, no immediate shutdown steps are being taken, she said.

“There’s the year-end and the first day of the year over the next two days (a time when people go out for celebrations) and we are keeping a constant eye on the situation,” Banerjee said. “However, no immediate steps (for shutdown) are being taken,” she said, adding that complete shutdowns have affected business for two years. “There’s no need for total shutdown. Areas affected can have restrictions, and for that we are reviewing the situation very seriously,” she said.

The government is also reviewing the situation with respect to educational institutions – schools and colleges – across the state. She asked people to follow Covid protocols.
