Cyclone Yaas: PM Modi & Mamata Banerjee to hold meeting at Kalaikunda on Friday
Cyclone Yaas has caused huge losses to the people in Bengal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in West Bengal on Friday to review the devastation caused by Cyclone Yaas in the state. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be at a meeting with PM Modi in West Midnapore’s Kalaikunda. Before coming to Bengal, PM Modi will also visit Odisha, where the cyclone had made landfall on Wednesday.
Cyclone Yaas had made landfall south of Balasore of Odisha at 9.15 AM on Wednesday. This is approximately 240 km from Kolkata. The entire impact of the landfall continued for three to four hours. The windspeed was up to 140 km per hour and gusts of 155 km per hour. Added to the impact of the cyclone in West Bengal, was the high tide that caused flooding in many places. Despite evacuating nearly 15 lakh people from the coastal areas – primarily in South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore of Bengal – there was huge losses caused to homes and agricultural land.
The Centre has allocated Rs 400 crore for Bengal for handling the crisis and Rs 600 crore has been allocated to Odisha. Banerjee has already raised the issue and said this is “unfair treatment” to Bengal, which has a much higher population than neighbouring Odisha.
It is possible that the CM may visit Digha after the meeting with PM Modi.
