West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced July 1, Doctors’ Day, a public holiday in the state. July 1 is celebrated as Doctors’ Day across the country to honour the legendary physician, the second chief minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962.

Doctors’ Day is celebrated to honour and value the contributions of doctors. Banerjee said that the doctors’ contributions during Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) will be remembered by people in the days to come, and as a mark of respect and honour, it is being announced as a public holiday in the state this time. She also appealed to the Centre to do the same nationally.
