Even as water started receding in various parts of disaster-hit Kerala, bodies are being found and hundreds are reported stuck. Huge amount of financial assistance is required to re-build the state, as the Central government, various state governments are sending aid. With the death toll rising to 191 since August 8, and bodies being found as the water started to recede, there are concerns over availability of clean drinking water and the fear of health hazards.
The Centre has set up 3,700 relief camps in the state, with altogether 5,645 relief camps throughout the state. While food is available in the state, authorities say that it is a challenge to transport these to various parts because roads, railways and flights have been massively hit by the flood situation.
Financial aid is coming in from various states, with Uttar Pradesh offering Rs 15 crore, West Bengal, Punjab, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi offering assistance of Rs 10 crore each. Jharkhand and Odisha have offered aids of Rs 5 crore each, while Telengana has handed over Rs 25 crore to Kerala. The United Arabian Emirates (UAE) has formed a committee to provide relief to the affected people in the state. Qatar too followed and offered 5 million dollar assistance.
However, officials say that the biggest challenge is to rebuild the state now and to prevent outbreak of contagious diseases.
