Former Cong MP Sushmita Dev joins Trinamool

She resigned from the Congress party on Sunday.

Former Congress MP Sushmita Dev on Monday join Trinamool Congress. The leader from Assam resigned from the Indian National Congress on Sunday and joined the Trinamool in Kolkata today.

She met party chief Mamata Banerjee and the party’s all-India general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Dev is likely to be the face of the Trinamool Congress in Assam.

Trinamool Congress tweeted photographs of her joining in the party’s official Twitter handle and wrote: “We warmly welcome the former President of All India Mahila Congress @sushmitadevinc to our Trinamool family! Inspired by @MamataOfficial, she joins us today in the presence of our National General Secretary @abhishekaitc & Parliamentary Party Leader, Rajya Sabha, @derekobrienmp

On Sunday, she wrote to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, though she did not specify her reasons for quitting. She wrote in her letter that she cherishes her “three-decade long association with the Indian National Congress”. She also wrote in her resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi: “I hope I have your good wishes as I begin a new chapter in my life of public service.”

Dev, the daughter of Assam’s Congress stalwart and Bengali leader Santosh Mohan Dev, was the chief of the Congress’ women’s wing, the All India Mahila Congress. She was earlier MP from Silchar, where her father has been very popular.
