Google doodle to mark Raja Ram Mohan Roy’s birth anniversary

Google on Tuesday created a doodle to mark the 246th birth anniversary of eminent social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy.

Roy paved his way for the Indian Renaissance, bringing in a number of social reforms. A Toronto-based designer and illustrator Beena Mistry has designed the doodle.

Roy was born on May 22, 1772 in a Brahmin family in Radhanagar village of Murshidabad district, West Bengal. He was the first one to raise voice against evil social practices like ‘Sati’, ‘child marriage’. He also extensively campaigned for equal rights of women. Ram Mohan Roy also published numbers of journals in Persian, Bengali, Hindi and English through which he protested against social evils. He died on September 26, 1883 in a village near Bristol, England.
