Is it winter yet? Kolkata cools with the rain and it’s a winter-like feeling!
Has winter arrived in Kolkata? Not yet, say weather experts.
Kolkatans enjoyed a wintry chill during the weekend as few spells of rain dipped the temperature by a few degrees. The Met office says that the next two days will also be rainy for Kolkata and coastal West Bengal because of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. An ensuing low pressure can also bring about isolated rains. Though it may not be significant, it will result in a drop in the temperature.
The low pressure, the Met office says, is expected to be forming over the west central Bay of Bengal within the next day which can bring about more rains to Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas.
People in Kolkata are elated with the nip in the air, and what feels like winter is already here. However, on the flip side, this is also a time to be extra-cautious about health due to the change in weather. Virologists say that the light rainfall might offer fresh breeding ground to the dengue virus carrying mosquito, the aedes aegypti. Therefore, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation authorities have asked people to keep the surroundings of their homes clean and to not allow fresh breeding of mosquitoes.
The minimum temperature on Saturday was 20 degrees celsius, three degrees below normal. On Sunday it was 22 degree celsius.
But winter, alas is still not here, for those who were hoping for an early winter. The weather experts say that this is just a “temporary phase”. So, let’s enjoy it while it lasts.
