Umar Khalid, a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), was allegedly shot at this afternoon outside the high security Constitution Club near Parliament. He was unhurt, but the unidentified men who shot at him escaped.
There were apparently three men who had come after him and fired twice before they escaped. He fell but remained unhurt. This happened at a tea stall outside the Constitution Club. The area is a high security zone especially due to Independence Day. Police have started investigating the matter.
Khalid had gone there to attend a programme, “Khauff Se Azaadi“, held by an organisation named ‘United Against Hate’. He was at the tea stall with some others when some men came towards him and attacked him, witnesses were quoted saying.
This is especially shocking since he had recently filed complaint with the police that he had received death threats, and had asked for police protection.
“There is an atmosphere of fear in the country, and anybody who speaks against the government is threatened,” Khalid was quoted by NDTV as saying after the attack.
Khalid was one of the students accused of sedition along with Kanhaiya Kumar and has received threats earlier too.
