Senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party defended his son Akash on Monday on the latter’s action last week when he attacked a municipal officer with a cricket bat and got arrested. He was later released on bail.

Akash Vijayvargiya, a first time BJP legislator from Indore-3, was denied bail initially after he was seen on a video attacking two officials in presence of his supporters, police officials and a television crew.

Dhirendra Byas and Asit Khare – two civic body officials – were leading a team of civic body workers during an anti-encroachment drive at Ganji Compound area of Indore city when they were confronted by Akash Vijayvargiya and his men. He was seen in the video threatening the officials and then attacking them with a cricket bat as some people surrounding him tried to stop him.

On Monday, Kailash Vijayvargiya said that his son was a “kacche khiladi” or a novice. He also said that there was “mishandling” from both sides, as reported by ANI. He said that officers should not be arrogant and talk to people’s representatives. “It was not a big issue but it was made huge,” he said.

Akash Vijayvargiya was released on Sunday on bail from a jail in Indore. He was garlanded on release and his supporters fired in the air. Akash Vijayvargiya said, “I don’t regret it. A woman was being dragged in presence of police and the houses of the poor were being demolished. I did what I thought was right at the moment.”
