Kolkata’s “fake camp” in which MP got vaccinated didn’t source injections from KMC

Health department seeks report from Kasba police station

After a “fake vaccination camp” was busted in Kolkata’s Kasba following a complaint from Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty, Kolkata Municipal Corporation has joined the probe along with Kolkata Police.

Chakraborty herself had taken what was claimed to be Covishield vaccine at the camp, organised by a person who claimed to be an IAS officer posted in the KMC. Debanjan Deb – who claimed to be joint commissioner of KMC – has now been arrested. The “vaccine” samples are now being sent for testing to find out the nature of their content. None of the people who were administered with the vaccine have received registration certificates. The KMC authorities meanwhile, have said that the vaccines were not sourced from them. The state health department has thus asked for a report from the Kasba police station to understand from where the vaccines may have been sourced.

Deb has reportedly said that he had purchased part of the vaccines in an open market. However, police authorities have said that this is not possible and thus the probe is looking at how and from where he got the vaccines, and whether there were some “government insiders” who were part of the racket. There is also inquiry to find out whether at all some “fake” vaccines were being sold in open market, or whether these vaccines administered were “genuine” at all. KMC administrator Firhad Hakim has said that it is being probed whether anyone in the KMC was involved in the racket.
