Local trains can be run after vaccination increases: Mamata Banerjee
Local trains are not being run in Bengal as a precaution for COVID-19.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today said that local trains can be run only after vaccination improves in urban and rural areas. At a press conference in the state administrative headquarters Nabanna, Banerjee said that at least 75% of urban areas need to be covered soon, as these are congested areas. In rural areas, there is more space and less congestion, and thus urban areas need to be prioritised. She said a certain percentage of urban and rural areas must be covered first, and only then local trains can be introduced.
Banerjee said that the government is being cautious and taking these steps ahead as there is the possibility of a third wave of COVID-19 striking, and because of the possibility of children getting affected by the wave. “We are being cautious because of the children,” she said.
As per existing schedule, local trains services are to remain shut till August 31.
